Working with a recruiter Watch out for these 5 red flags

Working with a recruiter Watch out for these 5 red flagsWorking with a recruiter Watch out for these 5 red flagsWhile therecruiting industryhas evolved, recruiter stereotypes still exist. They are based on exaggerated truths perpetuated by a small number ofrecruiters, but dont let a few bad apples distort your view of the whole profession. The best protection against working with a bad recruiter is being able to identify them and knowing when tomove on.You know youre working with a bad recruiter ifThey talk more than they listenA recruiters job is to get to know you. The only way they can do that is by listening to you tell your story. If they seem more interested in telling you how the relationship works and only ask basic things about your job search like salary expectations and desired title, dont waste your time. When you leave your meeting, ask yourself Does this recruiter know enough about me to retell my career story to an employer? Would they be able toadvocate on my behalfif t he employer has questions or concerns? You want your recruiter to understand what youre looking for. If they dont, theres no way they can adequately represent you or your interests. They keep calling you for jobs you dont wantIts one thing if you told the recruiter to send anything and everything your way. But assuming that you, like most job seekers, have very specific ideas about what direction you want yourcareerto go in, this should be a red flag. If they keep calling you for jobs you have no interest in, take it as a sign that they really dont know you or care to.Move on to another recruiter who will respect what youre looking for.You get submitted to jobs without your consent, then are bullied into going to the interviewSometimes, for competitive reasons and personal gain, recruiters will submit profilesto open roleswithout consentfrom the job seeker. Should the client be interested, candidates feel pressured tointerview for the job, regardless if they want it or not.Its import ant to distinguish a recruiter who knows you from one who is selfish. A recruiter mayurge you to consider a role that youre not completely sold on simply because they know both you and the client and firmly believe its a good match. In the latter situation, the recruiter is looking out for you, not themselves. Be sure to know the difference. They keep calling to ask you the saatkorn questionsRecruiters meet so many people that it can be hard to keep them straight. A certain amount of information may naturally fall through the cracks. However, repeatedly asking for the same information either indicates a lack of interest or lack ofgood organization, neither of whichhelps you find a new role.Theyre not responsiveRecruiters are extremely busy juggling new candidate interviews, prepping candidates forjob interviews, meeting with clients and handling all the administrative tasks that go along with it. That leaves little time for continued chit-chat on the phone. Of course, your recruiter should be available to talk about interview prep,post-interviewdebriefs and your job search updates. But, if you feel your recruiter isnt responsive at all, its time to end the relationship. This article originally appeared on FairyGodBoss and has been reprinted with permission.

Learn How to Ace an Interview for a Temporary Job

Learn How to Ace an Interview for a Temporary JobLearn How to Ace an Interview for a Temporary JobInterviews for temporary jobs are just as important as interviews for permanent positions. Even though youre interviewing to be a temp, its a competitive job market and its important to stand out from the crowd of job seekers seeking temporary employment. What a Temp Agency Interview Is Like When youre interviewing for a temp job through a staffing agency, you will interview with staff from the agency. If youre hired, you may also interview with the company where youll be working, or you might just be sent directly to an assignment without having to interview again. If youve applied directly for employment with a company hiring temp workers, youll interview with a hiring manager at the company. You may also be asked to interview with the department in which youll be working. In either case, its important to make the best impression you can on the interviewer. Research the Company Take some time to look up information on the company. Find out what types of temp staffers theyre looking for as well as what kinds of placements they offer. Dress Appropriately in Neat, Clean Attire Dont make the mistake of letting go of your professionalism. Since youre essentially an ambassador for the temp agency at the companies in which theyll place you, the staffing agency needs to believe that youll make a good impression. Wearbusiness casualattire at the minimum- and nix the sneakers, jeans, wrinkled shirts or dirty shoes. Depending on the job, it may be a good idea to go with full business attire. Have Your Resume, a Notepad, and a Working Pen on Hand In some cases, individuals seeking temp work may not have a resume. Though you should do your best to prepare one, if its not possible, at the very minimum bring a list of your work, volunteer, educational, and extracurricular experience. Know Your Availability If youre a student, know the exact dates that classe s start and end, and your class schedule if its during the semester. If you have other engagements, keep a list of them. You dont want to flounder when asked whether or not youre available, as the staffing agency could easily reisepass you up for someone who is definitely available. Review Sample Job Interview Questions Reviewsample temp job interview questions, and spend some time thinking about your answers. Temp job interview questions can differ from regular interview questions in that they can be highly specific to the role. For example, if youre applying for a data entry job, you may be asked to perform a typing speed test as part of the interview process. How to Ace the Interview Be on time, or a few minutes early (not more than 10 minutes early)Also, dont rush out. Be prepared to spend up to a couple hours with the temp agency as they identify and analyze your skills in order to assign you to an appropriate position.Have a breath mint on the way there, but nothing in your mouth when you arriveAnd, finish your coffee, soda or snack before you arriveSmile, introduce yourself and offer a firm handshaketo everyone you meetOnce again, at each company you work for, youre technically a representative of the agency. Put your best foot forward during your staffing agency interview, so they can trust youll do the saatkorn wherever they place you. Be honest about your goalsIf you are looking for a temp-to-permanent position, make sure they know that. If youre pursuing an education to further your professional development goalsor one that relates to the type of temp job you want, speak up about it, with the goal of communicating the fact that youd make a dedicated employee.Answer questions honestlyand try to put a positive spin on all your answers.Think of afew questions of your own to askwhen you have the opportunityIts fine to write them down ahead of time on your notepad. Remember peoples names and use them when speakingCommunication skills are important in literally every job you could have, so emphasize them during your interview. After the Interview Check these signs to see how well you did, and think about whether theres anything you need to mention when you send athank you note or email message after the interview. Its good etiquette to thank your interviewer, it gives you an opportunity to mention something you neglected to say during the interview or a point you want to clarify, and it keeps you in their mind when its time to decide on which person to hire.

3 reasons aspiring executives need a degree in tech management

3 reasons aspiring executives need a degree in tech management3 reasons aspiring executives need a degree in tech managementYou may think digital transformation doesnt apply to your industry. Think again. According to McKinsey, 70% of geschftlicherbei umganges will attempt a digital transformation, yet only 30% will succeed. Why do so many otherwise successful companies fail to adapt to the tech-driven world? Chief among many factors is the digital skills gap impacting 54% of geschftlicher umganges. Most traditional business education programs simply havent kept pace with todays technological demands, causing individuals who already have an MBA to seek out programs to learn more applied and specific digital skills. Ive seen this trend first-hand 30% of students in the Executive MS in Technology Management at Columbia University came in with an MBA already on their resume.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction , Neuroscience, and moreIn a dynamic marketplace where tech is king, I believe an Executive MS in Technology Management is the new must-have degree for business executives seeking to further their professional development. This is not to say the MBA is obsolete. The degree still has broad value in the business world, especially if youre just starting a career. But due to the inseparable nature of technology and business, there is an urgent need to supplement MBAs with education and theories that can be applied to the current digital reality. If youre an executive seeking continuing education, here are three reasons you should pursue a degree in tech management. Its not just for tech companiesAll industries have to leverage technology to survive, not just the Amazons of the world. Across 15 industries, ranging from manufacturing to energy, 47% of CEOs are challenged to make progress in digital business, according to a study from Gartner. Increasing efficiency and profit is the key dr iver. That same study found 56% of executives say digital improvements have already increased their profits. An Executive MS in Tech Management provides students with the tools to increase a companys bottom line. Programs emphasize the importance of using technology in business for strategic advantage and improved productivity.Graduates typically assume such flecks as CIOs, CTOs, CAOs, COOs, CEOs, CSOs, or CDOs. Steve Bandrowczak was named President and COO of Xerox while taking our program at Columbia University. Lauren Goodwin earned her Executive MS and was hired as BPs VP of Digital Transformation.Programs are specified to your needsExecutives like Steve and Lauren succeeded because what they learned was specific to their needs. Digital transformation is not a one-size-fits-all process, so programs offer a variety of focus areas, such as C-Level Management, Cybersecurity and Data Management, and Analytics. Executives can leverage this expertise to reach the next level in their ca reers.Matthew Smith was a student at Columbia Universitys program. As a lead architect for a digital transformation initiative at ATT, he chose a focus in Digital and Business Transformation. Within a month of beginning our program, Matts responsibilities at his company increased. He later accepted a position with a leading global consulting firm as a Senior Business and Integration Architect, a job that came with a pay raise of 35%.Mentors share real-world experienceFor every Netflix, theres a Blockbuster that was too slow to adapt to digital trends. Since 2000, over 50% of Fortune 500 companies have been acquired, merged, or declared bankruptcy.Individualized mentoring from an executive who has successfully led a digital transformation can help you lead your company to success instead of becoming another statistic. Unfortunately, legal issues sometimes prevent executives from getting one-on-one advice from CEOs or other leading technology executives. This is not the case with Execu tive MS programs, where students benefit from one-on-one mentorships with a top-level executive. The aforementioned Matthew Smith credited mentor David Widup, a former executive and Principal at N. Allen Associates, LLC, with helping him understand the intersection of business and technology.Ive seen growing interest in Columbias Executive MS program since its launch, a testament to the demands of digital transformation. With every business needing to integrate technology into its operations and an increasingly large digital skills gap, expert knowledge in technology can help keep you and your business from falling behind. I encourage aspiring C-Suite executives to consider degrees that will make them indispensable leaders for tomorrow.By Dr. Art Langeris the Academic Director of Technology Management at Columbia Universitys School of Professional Studies and Director of the Center for Technology Management at Columbia University. You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 ritua ls that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

When an Employer Contests Unemployment Benefits

When an Employer Contests Unemployment BenefitsWhen an Employer Contests Unemployment BenefitsWhat happens when you file for unemployment and your employer contests your claim? In most cases, the company contests your claim because they dont believe you are eligible to receive unemployment benefits. Some typical reasons for unemployment disqualification include when an employee is fired for cause, when the employee quits, or when they were considered a contractor rather than an employee. Of course, you never expect to lose your job or to need to apply for unemployment benefits. If you find yourself in this situation, you may be surprised to find your employer contesting your claim. It can be beneficial if you are someone who keeps careful, complete records of events and correspondence at work. You will be better prepared if your employment situation changes unexpectedly if you have documentation available to support your interests. What Happens When Your Unemployment Claim Is Cont ested If your employer contests your claim for unemployment, your case will be reviewed by an investigator from your State Department of Labor. The investigator will analyze the information provided by the employer and may interview the employer to gather additional insight. You may be contacted by phone or asked to come to the office and answer some questions about the circumstances surrounding your separation from the job. Make sure that you respond quickly, thoroughlyand honestly to any requests for information. The assigned staff from the unemployment office will then determine whether or bedrngnis you are eligible for benefits. If you are accepted for benefits, the employer can still request a hearing to appeal the decision. If you are denied benefits, you will receive a written notlageification of that decision which will include information regarding your appeals process and the deadline for filing an appeal. The Unemployment Appeals Process The appeals process will vary by state. Contact your State Unemployment Office for a determination on your specific circumstances and how appeals are handled your state. The information can usually be found on the state unemployment website, but dont hesitate to contact the office with any questions or if you need clarification. In general, heres how it works A legal representative can accompany you to the hearing and provide advice, but you will be required to present your case. You can bring witnesses who might counter any claims that the employer may be making as grounds for denying benefits. Your employer can also bring witnesses to support their position.Be sure to bring copies of any documentation that might be used to negate claims by your employer of misconduct. You must continue to file weekly claims throughout the appeals process if you wish to receive benefits for those weeks. How to Protect Your Claim The more documentation you can provide to support your claim for unemployment benefits, the more likely you will be to prove your eligibility. You should assemble any doctors notes, emails, human resources files, letters from supervisors and colleaguesand any other supporting evidence of the legitimacy of your claim. Your employer will be required to do the same, and the appeals board will make a determination of whose claim will prevail. Both parties are allowed to appeal the decision, and the appeals board will determine the outcome during a hearing. You will need to attend every meeting, or have a written legitimate excuse, or you risk your case being thrown out. Be sure to file your appeal within the deadline, and continue to file for benefits while the appeals process plays out, or you will not receive benefits during that time. Ask Away Do MBAs Really Matter

Ask Away Do master of geschftsleben administrations Really Matter Welcome toAsk Away, Recruiter.coms new weekly column Every Monday, well pose an employment-related question to a group of experts and share their answers. Have a question youd like to ask the experts?Leave it in the comments, and you might just see it in next weeksAsk Away This Weeks QuestionDo MBAs (and similar business-oriented degrees) really matter?Running several business, I can honestly tell you in the entrepreneurial realm, MBAs and other affiliated business degrees only matter if you plan on working for someone else. Even then, their earning basis is only marginally different. The biggest asset you can bring to an employer is yur rolodex and how you can interact with people. As a young entrepreneur,I would highly recommend taking the $100,000 you would spend on an MBA and investing it in yourself, sharpening your speaking sk ills, writing skills, and interpersonal relationships, and finding out ways you can make your employer money and make their job easier. However, there is a caveat to this if you get into a top 25 MBA program where the name carries weight (e.g., a Stanford, Harvard, UPenn, Berkeley, UCLA), then it does behoove you take to take the risk, assume the debt, and further your degree. Other than those circumstances, take it from a young entrepreneur that is always looking for talent dont get into debt and welcheste your time with an MBA program that no one has ever heard of.-Michael BanovacReal Estate and Internet EntrepreneurRMB Luxury Real EstateAn MBA definitely matters. However, an MBA is not always looked on in a positive light. In fact, one very successful company for which I worked hada no-MBA rule. While the enforcement of the rule was not absolute, therewas a definite bias against hiring people who had those three letters on theirresume. Why? In general, we found that MBAs tended t o be arrogant, spoke alanguage of their own, and were difficult to train. Several companies thatI have encountered have a bias against MBAs. What explains this bias? Thecompany for which I worked was founded and run by people who didnt haveMBAs. They valued real-world experience over theory and standardized bestpractices. On the other hand, companies thathave a high concentration of MBAs inleadership and management roles tend to highly value an MBA. As theexpression goes, birds of feather flock together. By hiring MBAs, theyvalidate the importance of their own education. Bottom line if you wantto work for a company that already employs a lot of MBAs, its important tohave an MBA.-Marc ProsserCofounder and Managing PartnerFitSmallBusines.comPost-secondary education of any kind is important because it demonstratesa level of commitment to reaching personal goals. There is also acorrelation between a university-level education and the understanding andpractical use of technology, specific ally that technology found in an officeenvironment. Having said all this, the MBA degree in particular isnt thebe-all, end-all.Dont hire an MBA unless the position actually demands it otherwise, youllbe overpaying and risking the employee not sticking around because theycant see how to apply their MBA-related skills. We experienced thisrecently with an MBA graduate who didnt have the patience to learn aboutthe company or understand our products and processes before deciding toresign within their first 30 days.-David CiccarelliCofounder andCEOVoices.comI believe that the MBA degree is as important as ever though the price for getting one is prohibitive.Prohibitive in terms of both real costs nearing $80,000 for tuition +$40,000 for books, room, and board + $20,000 for incidentals = $140,000 and opportunity costs of lost salary at an annualized rate of $75,000 = $150,000 over two years.Total costs incurred about $300,000.Average post-MBA pay is up 50 percent over pre-MBA pay.So, in the example above, post-MBA pay would be $112,500. Break-even costs fordigging out of that hole, assuming a 2.5 percent cost-of-living increase yearly, would come in year 11 (assuming years one and two were spent either inschool or workingstraight through). So you basically have a lost decade, if everything movedlinearly (as it does in a spreadsheet). In my case, my MBA was back in the mid-2000s and my path hasnt beenlinear, thankfully. I credit my MBA with immersion in many significantleadership theories, plus practical business skills many of which arerelevant today and used frequently. As far as hiring, I do look for MBA degrees in certain roles, and I viewthem as a strategic asset to the candidate.-Eric QuanstromCMOPipeliner CRMI work at Tidemark in Redwood Shores, California. Were 158-people strong andgrowing. Being so small, every single new hire has a huge impact on thecompany, especially when considering that the department they are joiningis likely less than 10 people in tot al. So the question of qualificationsis an important one. MBAs and similar degrees are extremely useful, thoughnot a requirement for us. We dont make hiring decisions based on thedegree, but based on experience, intellect, and kompetenzprofil contribution If someone is to make an MBAreally matter, though, they will get the best results by working in theirdesired industry for 2-3+ years before going back for that extra levelof education. The students who get the most out of those programs are theones who can contribute and relate to in-class discussions by recallingtheir own professional experiences. That way, its not just talk of theory, but of practical examples, issues, and resolutions. In short, MBAs really do matter, but not everyone should get one. As anorganization, we want and need a diverse workforce, and that includes levelof education. My advice to anyone considering one? If you want an MBA tomatter, spend a few years in the workforce before going back and gettingone. The va lue you will get from the program will increase immensely. Agood employer will hire you on your ability to contribute, not on a degreealone. Use the classes, experiences of classmates, and professors to learnand increase what you can offer, and then the MBA will matter.-Adam PlachtaLead Recruiter TidemarkIve been in higher education since 2004, when I took on a role as directorof business graduate programs overseeing an MBA program and masters degreeprogram in accounting. As a director of an MBA program, my ideal candidate was someone 5-10years out of college, and not necessarily with a business degree. The workexperience is important going into an MBA program. Conversely, the worstcandidate is a 22-year-old who just got a bachelors degree in business. For that student, an MBA is too much too soon. They dont get the value-added benefit as someone who has business experience. The MBA with business experience has a context for the classroom learning, and then can immediate go to their pro fessional position and apply whatthey learn. The other type of person who can benefit from an MBA is someone who majoredin something like engineering or law. The MBA gives them an extra dimensionand gives them a better shot of moving up in the organization.A good MBA is not just about learning out of a book and in a classroom. There should be case studies, group projects, intentional team-buildingactivities, international travel, visits to businesses, and real, live caseprojects to work on (i.e., an actual business with a real problem).-Rich GrantFormer Director of Business Graduate Programs at the Universityof MaineMy feeling towards the degree is that the best form of practicalexperience is still starting/running businesses even if they fail. Ifyou fail and try again, the cause of your previous failure is unlikelyto be a problem again since you can now predict it and avoid it. If yousucceed, youve also learned a lot.The MBA I received did provide some useful experience, mainly theo retical. Forexample, when studying economics, we learned about supply and demandcharts. That is an interesting and useful tool that I hadnt learnedfrom experience alone. However, for thingslike importing and speaking to Chinesemanufacturers, the degree barely helped. We learned about internationalbusiness and cultural differences, but when it comes down to importing, there are a lot more hurdles to overcome (especially government, trust, and reliability).I cant speak on behalf of employees, but as an entrepreneur, the degreeis optional.-Daniel BradyOwnerHeavenly Hammocks
